Louis Pascal was the son of a Gironde police commissioner. He was Toulouse-Lautrec’s cook and in 1893 the latter made another, similar portrait of this model in profile. This second painting, Monsieur Louis Pascal Seen from Rear, conserved at the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, in Albi, is the principal clue to the date of the gouache in the Masp Collection. According to Camesasca (1987, p. 234) the latter may have been a first idea for the pose of the Albi picture.
