TEXTS

Very little is known about Schute, a painter (probably German), who spent time in Brazil and produced a series of works that have been lost. The composition of Paulo Afonso Waterfall seems to have been inspired by a photograph by Italian-French photographer Auguste Stahl (1828-1877). It is a panoramic view, from above, of a point where two arms of the Rio São Francisco meet, culminating into a magnificent waterfall. In the central part of the composition, small figures observe the grandeur of the water feature, its subjugating and literally super-human power. The penchant for wild and majestic landscapes resonates with the aesthetic of the sublime that was so dear to romantic painters. The characters, positioned before this ample view, have their backs turned to the spectator, thus remaining anonymous. Their presence mirrors the presence of the viewer who is also admiring the natural scenery. Two of them, wearing cape and hat, seem to be standing and talking next to a third character who is seated and shirtless. The different gestures and clothes may suggest a social hierarchy amongst them.

The painting Paulo Afonso Waterfall of obviously romantic character depicts individuals seen from the back, blending into the landscape, as if inviting the viewer to a share in an experimental investigation in nature. Schute sought to reconcile this romantic perspective with a specific interest while recording an instance that he must have observed with the eyes of a naturalist.
