Renouncement to Enthronement – Amador Bueno Acclaimed is a draft for a large canvas (170 x 225 cm) representing the acclamation of Amador Bueno. It is conserved at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, seat of the São Paulo state government. Amador Bueno Ribeira, born in Seville, Spain, descendent of the traditional Portuguese Pires family, died in 1649. He was a farm owner in São Paulo, rmagistrate of the province, assayer and auditor of the Royal Treasury. When Portugal recovered its independence from the Spanish crown in 1640, São Paulo inhabitants rebelled against the Portuguese colonizers and decided to proclaim Amador Bueno king of São Paulo in 1641. He refused the title, taking refuge at the convent of São Bento and publicly proclaiming his loyalty to the king of Portugal, Dom João IV. The painting features Amador Bueno renouncing the royal title in front of the São Bento monastery.
