Existing documents reveal that the donor acquired the painting Village Road in Brussels around 1930. The dedicatee may have been Norbert Pain, who owned several paintings by Vollon, as shown in the sales catalogue of his collection held in Paris at Ho- tel Drouot, on 23rd May, 1900. However, this sketch was not included in the catalogue.
